McMahon was retained by BRTA to complete a feasibility study and provide project management services for the design and construction of the Joseph Scelsi Intermodal Transportation Center. McMahon prepared conceptual site plans and analysis for an intermodal transportation center constructed adjacent to an active rail line serving Amtrak and freight lines. Plans for the center were developed to accommodate vehicular, bus, bicycle, and pedestrian access in and around the site, as well as passenger access to the rail platform and downtown Pittsfield. McMahon also designed a traffic signal priority control system at three intersections adjacent to proposed BRTA facility. The system, utilized by emergency vehicles and BRTA buses, operates with high and low priority pre-emption for these vehicles.The design included timing adjustments, proposed signal structure locations, and traffic signal hardware and software upgrades at the coordinating intersections operated by the Pittsfield Fire Department and the City of Pittsfield Engineering Department.
